Richardson commits to Stetson University
With a culture built on grit, toughness, and relentless determination, the Lincoln Trail College women's basketball program is celebrating a standout season. Several players earned offers from four-year universities, including guard Laniya Richardson, who has officially committed to continuing her athletic and academic career at Stetson University, an NCAA Division I program in DeLand, Florida.
"Our athletes may be undersized, but they never back down," said Head Coach Tana Coleman. "They compete with grit, they listen, they grow — and they're hungry to take their game to the next level."
Richardson, a Division II transfer, flourished at Lincoln Trail, showcasing her athleticism and ability to attack the rim in an offensive system designed to highlight her strengths. She averaged over 21 points per game and remained in the top 20 nationally across multiple categories throughout the season.
"Laniya was able to take over games and bring four-year coaches through our doors — not just for her, but for her teammates too," said Coach Coleman. "She's helped elevate the visibility of our entire program."
Supporting athletes through the recruiting and commitment process is a cornerstone of Coleman's coaching philosophy. "I tell them to talk to every coach who shows interest. It's not just about the scholarship — it's about finding the best fit for who they are and who they want to become."
Transitioning from JUCO to a four-year program can be challenging, but Coleman believes that's where her players shine. "JUCO players are gritty and hungry. I work to develop their basketball IQ and prepare them for the expectations they'll face at the next level."
For Coach Coleman, seeing athletes move on is more than just basketball. "After one or two years here, these young women are learning who they are. Watching them grow into strong students, athletes, and leaders — that's the real win."
As Lincoln Trail College continues to earn national recognition, players like Laniya Richardson are proving that talent, heart, and hard work open doors.
"We're proud of her and excited to watch her thrive at Stetson University," said Coach Coleman.
