FAFSA Completion Information


The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) should be submitted to the federalgovernment as soon as possible after January 1 in order to begin the process for establishing needfor financial aid. After filling out the FAFSA, the student will receive a Student Aid Report(SAR) from the Department of Education.


  • Open your internet browser. Go to

  • To apply for a pin, click on PIN SITE located on the top toolbar. A pin will allow you (and yourparents) to electronically sign your FAFSA application.

  • From the Home page click on Start A New FAFSA or Log In.

  • Enter the student’s name, social security number and date of birth in the “mmddyyyy”format.

  • Click Next.

  • Select the school year for which you are applying for financial aid. The 2013-2014 schoolyear is for students attending during Fall 2013, Spring 2014 and Summer 2014.

  • Create a password (4 to 8 characters). If you do not finish the application, the passwordallows you to come back to the saved application and continue where you left off.

  • Click Next.

  • On the Introduction Page you may review the information on filling out a FAFSA or click Next.

  • Now fill in the information as requested on each screen. A Help and Hints box appearson the right side of the screen for each question.

  • Under Schools to receive your results, enter a federal school code:

  • Lincoln Trail College 009786

  • Click Search. Scroll down and check the box of your desired school and click Add.

  • Click Next. Under Housing Plans, select either With Parent or Off-Campus.

  • Continue to fill out the FAFSA to determine dependency status. If you are a dependentstudent you will need to fill in information about your parents.

  • On the Financial Information page you can click on “I will file but have not yetcompleted my return”, estimate your 2012 taxes and update later. When you select Already Completed for your 2012 taxes AND are able to answer No to the tax questionsin the box ~ you will have the option to link to the IRS. When you click on “Link to IRS”you will be able to download your tax information directly into your FAFSA. NOTE: On theIRS website you MUST enter in your address EXACTLY as it appears on your 2012 taxesand enter in your correct filing status. After the transfer is complete DO NOT change anyinformation transferred in from the IRS. For additional help on the IRS Data Retrievalprocess go to the financial aid page on the website for a helpful video. Yourschool’s Financial Aid office can also assist you with details instructions.

  • Continue filing in the rest of the information needed.

  • On the Sign and Submit screen you may choose to print your FAFSA information to have acopy of what you have entered.

  • Under “How do you (the student/the parent) want to provide your signature” select Sign electronically with your PIN (if you have a pin).

  • Under Terms of Agreement select Agree.

  • Click Submit My FAFSA Now.

  • Print the confirmation page and retain it for your records, if desired.

What happens after I apply?

The school(s) that you have selected will receive the results of what you submitted on yourFAFSA application in the form of an Institutional Student Information Record or ISIR. You willreceive a request from the school’s Financial Aid Office for additional information regarding thecompletion of your file. Please submit the requested information as soon as possible to avoiddelays in the processing of your file.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant

Federal Work Study

William D. Ford Federal Direct Loans



Monetary Award Program Grant
